Mary Sawyers Baker Prize 2013

Ladies and gentleman, the 2013 winners of The Mary Sawyers Baker Prize:

CONGRATULATIONS!

Each artist will receive $25,000 and be featured in an exhibition at The Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA) from February – March, 2014.

Jonathan Latiano is an installation artist with an MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art. His surreal work incorporates elements of biology, astronomy, physics and geology to create surreal spaces and dreamlike experiences. “It is an incredible honor to receive the Mary Sawyers Baker Prize,” says Jonathan. “I owe so much to my fellow artists and friends here in the Baltimore art scene, their dedication to their practice and incite into the material and mediums in which they work set a constant bar that I aim to reach in my own studio on a daily basis. Its groups of colleagues like this and awards like the Baker Prize that make Baltimore such an invigorating place to be an artist right now.”

 

Dariusz Skoraczewski is the Baltimore Symphony’s principal cellist and the laureate of various international competitions such as the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, the Leonard Rose Competition in Washington, D.C., and the Rostropovich Competition in Paris. As a soloist he has performed with numerous orchestras in the US including the Montgomery Symphony, Alexandria Symphony, Arlington Philharmonic, Lancaster Symphony, and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. He has also been featured at the Great Hall in Baltimore, the Barge Music Festival in New York City, and the prestigious Carnegie Hall.

 

Lynne Parks is a self-taught visual artist with a BA from Hollins University and an independent major in creative writing/ theater/film studies. “I’m grateful to the Baker Artist Awards for many reasons,” says Lynne. “As a self-taught artist without affiliations and few resources, Baker has provided me with exposure and encouragement that I would have been hard pressed to find elsewhere. Opportunities have arisen for shows, collaboration, feedback, and camaraderie. The community they have created is hugely supportive and inspirational. I am deeply honored to be a recipient of a Mary Sawyers Baker Award.”

The announcement was made on a special episode of Maryland Public Television’s ArtWorks This Week with Rhea Feikin and special guest Jeannie Howe, Director of the Greater Baltimore Cultural Alliance. In addition to awarding the Mary Sawyers Baker Prize winners, the 9 b Grant winners from this award season were also featured in this special episode of Artworks. Check out the video above for more.

The winners of this year’s b-grants were Donna Jacobs, Leah Cooper, Jenny O’Grady, CJay Philip, Ruby Fulton, Katherine McCord, Robby Rackleff, Nicole A. Martinell, and Todd Marcus.

Among the b-grant winners, Todd Marcus was awarded an additional prize of $500 in honor of Semmes G. Walsh, whose forty-plus years of service to the Baker Fund were characterized by integrity, common sense and a commitment to artistic excellence and his love of music. Jenny O’Grady was awarded an additional prize of $500 honoring Nancy Haragan for her decade of creative service to Baltimore’s arts sector.

The Baker Artist Awards has as an awards platform to a thriving online community that reflects the regions rich and diverse cultural offerings.
